I wanted to write this short blog as a ‘dear diary’ moment, to document the pride we feel serving the families of West Wickham and to thank grieving families for allowing us the honour of caring for their loved ones’ funerals and final journey. Being a fifth-generation family member, I am deeply proud to carry forward the Uden name and dedicate my working life to our family business, which has been supporting families with compassion and respect since 1881.
There’s something incredibly special about family businesses, and I see it in the values we bring to our work every day. A family-run company feels a deep responsibility to the community, not only to provide excellent service but to truly care for each family that walks through our doors. Our new West Wickham branch, open for just a few months now, is another extension of that commitment — a testament to our desire to support families for generations to come.
The beautifully restored former Barclays Bank on West Wickham High Street has already become a comforting space for many, thanks to my brother Ben, who put his heart into overseeing the transformation. Combining the building’s historic character with modern, state-of-the-art facilities, Ben ensured it’s a place of warmth, reflection, and peace — a sanctuary for families during difficult times. When we first learned the bank was available, we jumped at the chance to make it a space where families could gather to arrange the farewell their loved ones deserve. My cousin Charlie Uden is managing the branch and has really enjoyed meeting many of the community and is also so pleased to be able to support the community of West Wickham during times of grief, arranging funerals and caring for the deceased.
For us, being part of a family business is more than a career; it’s a calling and a bond that spans generations. We’re honoured to work with our community, upholding traditions while embracing change, and we are grateful for the trust so many have placed in us.
