W. Uden & Sons (Eltham) handled the arrangements for my late cousin’s funeral. Every step was smoothly and tactfully handled - from the initial enquiry and then the more detailed discussions, with Sarah making the whole process very straightforward, to the day of the funeral itself when Callum and the team could not have been more considerate and helpful. My thanks to everyone involved for their efforts in lessening the burden at a difficult time.
From the very first phone call they were so professional. Polite and caring. All questions were answered with empathy and respect.
I lost my Dad on the 11th March 2026 - Jim Fairlie. I could not praise this company enough. They were so kind, professional and gave lots of lovely advice, which helped to make such a difficult time more bearable. Their offices were beautiful, the cars and staff immaculate and every time I visited my dad, they tactfully prepared me. I would particularly like to mention Dean and Sarah at the Eltham branch, who made and had every detail perfect. You have to be a special kind of person to do this job, dealing with people who are grieving, but they were wonderful. So from my family a big THANK YOU to them. x
W. Uden and Sons provided faultless service and support during a difficult time for our family. They provided us with all of the contacts that we'd need to create a service that was a fitting tribute to my late father. All of their colleagues were well presented, courteous and sympathetic on the day. If you find yourself in need of a funeral director company, I'd look no further than Uden's.
Throughout this process Sarah and the rest of the staff were excellent and gave advice at every stage and made regular contact to update us with the arrangements and can recommend them without hesitation.

I want to share my sincere thanks to Uden of Eltham for the outstanding care they provided to my family. Their service was first class from beginning to end.Uden looked after my dad in their chapel of rest with such dignity and respect until his burial. Knowing he was in their care brought real comfort to us during an incredibly difficult time.Sarah, Chris & Denise In particular were so helpful through out, warm and friendly. On the day of the funeral, Jay, the main director — went above and beyond in every possible way. He took complete ownership of the arrangements, from managing the church music to thoughtfully organising a chair so my elderly mother could sit comfortably at her late husband’s graveside. His kindness, professionalism, and attention to detail made an enormous difference.Uden also used their newest range of Mercedes hearse and limousine, which were immaculate and added a real sense of dignity to the day.Choosing Uden lifted so much of the stress and burden I was feeling while grieving. Their support allowed us to focus on being together as a family, and for that I am truly grateful.I cannot thank Jay and the team enough for their compassion and exceptional service

If the death is expected and occurs at home:

  • Contact the deceased’s doctor and inform them of the death
  • Once the doctor has given permission to move the deceased, you may contact us and we will aim to be with you within 1-2 hours, to move the person who has died into our care
  • The doctor will issue the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death to the family representative for registration purposes

If the death occurs at a Nursing Home:

  • If a resident dies in a nursing home the GP (or qualified nurse on duty) can verify death
  • The GP will issue a medical certificate for the family to collect which will allow them to register
  • Most nursing homes will record the resident’s funeral wishes on their care plan. This will specify the chosen Funeral Director and whether the deceased wanted a cremation or a burial.
  • Once called, we will remove the deceased into our care

If the death occurs in Hospital:

  • If death occurs at the hospital, then the Doctors and Nurses will liaise with the hospital Bereavement Office, who will arrange all the appropriate paperwork on your behalf.

In cases of sudden and unexpected death:

  • If a death is unexpected then dial 999 and request an ambulance and police immediately, explaining the circumstances. In the event of an unexpected death occurring, then a coroner may become involved and may order a post-mortem to be carried out to establish an accurate cause of death. The coroner’s officer will keep you informed should this be the case and will liaise with us.

In cases where the Coroner is required to investigate the death, the deceased will be taken to a hospital or mortuary until a post-mortem examination is completed. If the death is expected, the funeral director will collect the deceased from the place of death and transport them to the appropriate chapel of rest, pending the arrangement of the funeral. Many large companies have central mortuaries or “hubs” where they store the deceased.

Here at W. Uden & Sons, each of our funeral homes are equipped with their own chapel of rest and have fully hygienic facilities for the care of your loved one. The only exception to this is our Dulwich branch, which shares these facilities with our branch at Camberwell.

Yes, once the deceased’s death has been certified, call your local branch and our experienced staff will guide you through the process of arranging the funeral. The only exception is when the Coroner has indicated that he intends to hold a full inquest into the circumstances surrounded the death.
