I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Uden Funeral Directors, Eltham for the professional, supportive and compassionate service they provided to me when organising my husband's funeral. Sarah was friendly and covered everything necessary in a calm manner that helped my niece and I tremendously when we met with her to agree the details of John's funeral. Her Celebrant recommendation was spot on - thank you. On the day of the funeral Dean and his team were excellent and John's final journey was dignified and perfect.I am so pleased I entrusted John's funeral to Ben, Sarah, Dean and all the team at Eltham and always felt we were in safe hands.
A perfect experience from start to finish.Warm ,Friendly, and professional. All of the staff made me feel that I chosenThe right Funeral company to look after my husband David on his final Journey.Thank you Udens.
We recently entrusted W. Uden & Sons, with the arrangements for our mother’s funeral, and I cannot thank them enough for the exceptional service they provided. From start to finish, the team was professional, compassionate, and deeply respectful, guiding us through each step with clarity and kindness. They were consistently informative and communicative, ensuring we understood all the options available and were fully supported throughout. Nothing ever felt rushed or impersonal — they truly took the time to listen and accommodate our wishes. One particularly meaningful gesture was allowing my niece and nephew to travel atop the carriage, alongside the carriage driver, during the procession. This incredibly special moment brought great comfort to them and to all of us — a memory they will always treasure.Their thoughtfulness, flexibility, and attention to detail meant so much during such a difficult time. We are incredibly grateful for their care and support, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend their services to anyone in need of a team who are not only highly professional but also genuinely kind and empathetic.
I cannot recommend Udens enough. From the moment I first called you when my lovely Dad died at home i knew he was in the best possible hands. We felt at ease knowing you would treat him like one of your own.You treated him and us with such care and respect, you supported us through the funeral arranging and thanks to you all it was the most beautiful day.
I just wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for everything the team did for my mum’s funeral. From the very first conversation to the day of the service, your kindness, professionalism, and attention to detail made such a difficult time a little easier for us.The care and respect you showed towards my mum and our family did not go unnoticed, and we truly appreciate the support you provided throughout the whole process. It meant so much to us to know she was in good hands,Thank you again for all your help and compassion—it made a world of difference to us during this incredibly tough time.
We’ve sadly had to organise two funerals in the last year. On both occasions, the service we received from Sarah and her colleagues was kind, reassuring, respectful and professional. I’d wholeheartedly recommend them.
We entrusted W. Uden & Sons to lay my mum, Alice, to rest towards the end of February after she sadly passed away suddenly following a short stay in hospital. From the moment they brought my mum into their care while the funeral arrangements were being made, they were incredibly supportive accommodating our requests, answering any questions we had, and offering valuable guidance on best practices. Given the circumstances, we couldn’t have asked for anything better. We have used W. Uden & Sons' services a few times in the past, and their unwavering professionalism, compassion, and patience have always stood out. A special thanks to Ben and Stanley, who also conducted my mum's service, for everything they did for us. I honestly cannot recommend their services highly enough.
The funeral of my wife Sharon was professionally carried out with dignity and respect by the Uden teamMathew assisted me from day one with all the arrangements and personally ensured that on the day of the funeral all the wishes of the family were met in fullI have no hesitation in recommending the services provided by Udens
From start to finish, Uddens were kind, caring, understanding and very professional, nothing was to much trouble for them, it was a very hard emotional time for me losing my soul mate, and they were so helpful and kind and always there to help and support me, I honestly 100% recommend them and guarantee their service. Sincere thank you, Denice, Ben, ,Lee and all the staff at Eltham
We used Uden & Sons in May 2024 for our Mum’s unexpected death, when we first met Stan who walked us through the entire process with compassion and warmth. He also led our Mum’s funeral on the day and Sarah, their photographer, came to take photos so that our father, who was terminally ill and unable to be at the funeral, could be a part of it. When our father died just nine months later, there was no doubt in our minds that we would use Uden again and we did so this January 2025, requesting Stan and Sarah again, both of whom were there and made the loss so much more bearable. Every member of staff there manages to express genuine warmth without compromising professionalism and that is something that can be hard to combine. We had the Bentley package both times and the cars were absolutely immaculate. They are a family business and they made us feel like a part of theirs, which was immeasurable at a time when we were losing our own. Thank you so much Stan, Sarah, Sarah, Ben, Jay and all at Uden & Sons for supporting us. You do a hard thing, wonderfully.

Our Packages

Having to make funeral arrangements whilst in the turmoil of losing a loved one can be highly stressful. Using the knowledge gained from decades of caring for families, we have introduced a range of funeral packages to help reduce the burden of all the decision making.

The packages include just about everything that you need for the funeral to go ahead, are really helpful and will fit the needs of many families, but also remember that we can tailor each service to be as unique as the person that you are remembering.

If the death is expected and occurs at home:

  • Contact the deceased’s doctor and inform them of the death
  • Once the doctor has given permission to move the deceased, you may contact us and we will aim to be with you within 1-2 hours, to move the person who has died into our care
  • The doctor will issue the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death to the family representative for registration purposes

If the death occurs at a Nursing Home:

  • If a resident dies in a nursing home the GP (or qualified nurse on duty) can verify death
  • The GP will issue a medical certificate for the family to collect which will allow them to register
  • Most nursing homes will record the resident’s funeral wishes on their care plan. This will specify the chosen Funeral Director and whether the deceased wanted a cremation or a burial.
  • Once called, we will remove the deceased into our care

If the death occurs in Hospital:

  • If death occurs at the hospital, then the Doctors and Nurses will liaise with the hospital Bereavement Office, who will arrange all the appropriate paperwork on your behalf.

In cases of sudden and unexpected death:

  • If a death is unexpected then dial 999 and request an ambulance and police immediately, explaining the circumstances. In the event of an unexpected death occurring, then a coroner may become involved and may order a post-mortem to be carried out to establish an accurate cause of death. The coroner’s officer will keep you informed should this be the case and will liaise with us.

In cases where the Coroner is required to investigate the death, the deceased will be taken to a hospital or mortuary until a post-mortem examination is completed. If the death is expected, the funeral director will collect the deceased from the place of death and transport them to the appropriate chapel of rest, pending the arrangement of the funeral. Many large companies have central mortuaries or “hubs” where they store the deceased.

Here at W. Uden & Sons, each of our funeral homes are equipped with their own chapel of rest and have fully hygienic facilities for the care of your loved one. The only exception to this is our Dulwich branch, which shares these facilities with our branch at Camberwell.

Yes, once the deceased’s death has been certified, call your local branch and our experienced staff will guide you through the process of arranging the funeral. The only exception is when the Coroner has indicated that he intends to hold a full inquest into the circumstances surrounded the death.

Who can register a death?

  • A relative
  • A person present at the death

  • The person arranging the funeral

Call the registry office to make an appointment – you will need to take the following with you:

  • Birth certificate & information regarding date of birth (if available) of the deceased
  • Some money to pay for copies of the death certificate required to administer the deceased’s estate.
