I cannot fault W.Udens at all. The service they provided at an already very distressing time for me and my family was impeccable, and every detail was carefully arranged to suit our requests. They took care of my husband with thought and were attentive to every little thing I asked, even down to how my husband was presented in the chapel of rest. Their level of dignity and respect they showed throughout the whole process was impeccable, and I honestly couldn’t have wished for any better. All of the staff are an absolute credit to the company, but especially Sarah - she made myself and my family feel so comfortable from the moment we met her and even since my husbands funeral has continued to check in with me.I would recommend W.Udens to anyone wanting to provide the perfect send off for their loved ones.
I would highly recommend W. Uden & Sons Funeral Directors in Eltham. From the first meeting with Sarah all arrangements were completed in a sincere and sympathetic manner. Andrew Uden organised the funeral with professional help of his colleagues and immaculate turned out vehicles. Julie Powell (Celebrant) was excellent in presenting the service.
Thank you a beautiful experience with udens from Sarah to stan and colleagues to Sarah the photographer honestly we as a family couldn’t have asked for more for my partners funeral and the day was special and we was supported throughout by all of the udens team a big thank you once again absolutely beautiful day I will cherish forever
Reviewing on behalf of my mother and she has said -Thank you for the care and respect you gave my mum and our family at such a painful time. From the first arrangements to the last time we got to see our mum, it was so dignified, respectful, and beautiful. From the office staff, pallbearers, and the people who were with my mum to get her ready, everyone at Udens, I couldn't ask for a better way to send my mum off.
I completely trust Udens- they are organised, courteous, sensitive and extremely thorough. The communication was super throughout and my late sister had the best send off.
My family could not have been happier with the care the whole team provided. It was a difficult time made easier because of you. Many thanks to Jack.

We used Udens in Eltham for my husband’s funeral. From start to finish they did a fantastic job. Sarah and her team were so helpful and professional while also being very kind caring and supportive throughout.
The Quinnell family would like to thank Udens and Sarah, at Eltham, for the excellent and professional service you gave us for our dear Brother Mark who passed on 31st March. The Celebrant Sarah did the most wonderful service and everyone said what a lovely send off for Mark. Thank you Udens for making it a memorable day on 22nd May 2026.

If the death is expected and occurs at home:

  • Contact the deceased’s doctor and inform them of the death
  • Once the doctor has given permission to move the deceased, you may contact us and we will aim to be with you within 1-2 hours, to move the person who has died into our care
  • The doctor will issue the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death to the family representative for registration purposes

If the death occurs at a Nursing Home:

  • If a resident dies in a nursing home the GP (or qualified nurse on duty) can verify death
  • The GP will issue a medical certificate for the family to collect which will allow them to register
  • Most nursing homes will record the resident’s funeral wishes on their care plan. This will specify the chosen Funeral Director and whether the deceased wanted a cremation or a burial.
  • Once called, we will remove the deceased into our care

If the death occurs in Hospital:

  • If death occurs at the hospital, then the Doctors and Nurses will liaise with the hospital Bereavement Office, who will arrange all the appropriate paperwork on your behalf.

In cases of sudden and unexpected death:

  • If a death is unexpected then dial 999 and request an ambulance and police immediately, explaining the circumstances. In the event of an unexpected death occurring, then a coroner may become involved and may order a post-mortem to be carried out to establish an accurate cause of death. The coroner’s officer will keep you informed should this be the case and will liaise with us.

In cases where the Coroner is required to investigate the death, the deceased will be taken to a hospital or mortuary until a post-mortem examination is completed. If the death is expected, the funeral director will collect the deceased from the place of death and transport them to the appropriate chapel of rest, pending the arrangement of the funeral. Many large companies have central mortuaries or “hubs” where they store the deceased.

Here at W. Uden & Sons, each of our funeral homes are equipped with their own chapel of rest and have fully hygienic facilities for the care of your loved one. The only exception to this is our Dulwich branch, which shares these facilities with our branch at Camberwell.

Yes, once the deceased’s death has been certified, call your local branch and our experienced staff will guide you through the process of arranging the funeral. The only exception is when the Coroner has indicated that he intends to hold a full inquest into the circumstances surrounded the death.
